With David Cameron’s unequivocal backing of Maria Miller leading to her resignation, The Labour Party are now calling on the Prime Minister also give his backing to Michael Gove.

“It’s in the whole country’s interest that Gove isn’t allowed anywhere near important education decisions,” Labour’s deputy leader Harriet Harman said.

“So to make sure he knows he is not trusted to be education secretary anymore we are asking the Prime Minister to make it perfectly clear, and give him his full backing.

“He could speed the whole process up by also saying he thinks he is doing a great job and has much more to do. That should be enough to push him over the edge.”

Labour went on to suggest Cameron tells us all he has ‘full confidence’ in other members of his cabinet including Iain Duncan Smith, George Osborne, Danny Alexander and Theresa May, but stopped short of asking him to show support for Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

“It wouldn’t be fair to ask him to lie to parliament,” Harman said. “Not even Nick Clegg can honestly back Nick Clegg.”

Asked how she thought Ed Miliband dealt with the Maria Miller issue at Prime Minister’s Question, Harman said “I fully support him”.
