Mistrial called in Titchener case after jury members found to be Archers fans

In happier times, before a ratings boost became necessary

The Judge in the Helen Titchener trial has suspended proceedings after finding that some of the jury had been following the events leading up to the trial by listening to their lives on “Radio 4” and could not be expected to give an unbiased verdict based solely on the evidence presented in court.

The first hint of anything untoward came when Helen, giving evidence in her own defence, revealed that her husband, the victim Rob Titchener had raped her, some months before she stabbed him with a kitchen knife.

“Aha,” one juror was heard to whisper to her colleagues “I wondered if that’s what happened. The script was quite vague at the time but she was definitely depressed afterwards, didn’t you think?”

With one juror already dismissed after tweeting about the case, these latest events have led some on social media to comment that this is little more than a show trial. They will all be sentenced for contempt of court one evening next week, just before “Front Row” and again the following afternoon, shortly after two o’clock.
