HMRC wins “Missing Woods for Trees” award after cracking down on eBay users rather than eBay itself

HMRC have scooped the prestigious ‘Missing Woods for the Trees’ award after launching a huge crackdown on people who make money buying and selling on eBay, while simultaneously failing to notice that there is an entity called eBay avoiding zillions in tax.

The eBay seller crackdown is expected to be followed by an HMRC campaign to tax beggars collecting money in Starbucks cups.

An HMRC spokesman said the award was a vindication of their strategy of going after the small fish, as the big fish were a bit hard to catch given they lived at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea and were guarded by schools of snarling PWC sharks.

When asked for its reaction to the eBay seller crackdown, an eBay spokesman’s comment “If you are buying or selling an item with a view to making a profit, then you may be liable to pay tax on any profits” has made eBay an early frontrunner for the coveted “Barefaced Cheek” award.
